Preparing for Your Endometrial Biopsy
An endometrial biopsy is a procedure to take a small sample of the lining of your uterus (endometrium) for testing. It is commonly done to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding or other uterine conditions.
Please let us know if you would like to discuss additional comfort measures during this procedure. Penthrox is an inhaled medication that we can provide in clinic. Patients need a support person to drive them home afterward so we want to arrange this ahead of your appointment. We are happy to discuss further.
Before the Procedure:
- Medications: You may take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen, about 30-60 minutes before the procedure to help reduce discomfort. [1]
- Avoid Certain Activities: Do not douche, use tampons, or have vaginal intercourse for at least 24 hours before the biopsy. [2]
- Inform Your Doctor: Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, as pregnancy is a contraindication for the procedure. [1][3]
After the Procedure:
- Cramping and Spotting: It is normal to experience some cramping and light spotting for a few days after the biopsy.[1][3]
- Pain Relief: You can continue to take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.
- Avoid Certain Activities: Refrain from using tampons, douching, or having vaginal intercourse for at least 24 hours after the procedure to reduce the risk of infection. [2]
- Monitor for Complications: Contact the clinic if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, or foul-smelling discharge, as these could be signs of infection or other complications.[1][3]
Follow-Up:
- Your doctor will discuss the biopsy results with you during a follow-up appointment and recommend any further treatment if necessary.
- These instructions are designed to help you prepare for your endometrial biopsy and ensure a smooth recovery. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the clinic.
